About Moissanite

Moissanite, scientifically known as silicon carbide, is a brilliant lab-created gemstone and a diamond alternative. Discovered in 1893 by Nobel Prize-winning chemist Henri Moissan, it was initially mistaken for diamond in meteor samples. Naturally rare, Moissanite is now produced in labs by Charles & Colvard, allowing us to enjoy this stunning gem in engagement rings and fine jewelry.

Durability

Durability is an important factor to consider when selecting a gem or diamond for your jewelry. Moissanite sits at 9.25-9.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness making it second only to diamond, earth’s hardest material. It is an ideal choice, along with diamond and laboratory grown diamond for daily wear.

Moissanite is also considerably less expensive than natural and laboratory grown diamonds when comparing similar sizes and qualities. Appearance

Moissanite, like diamond, is extremely brilliant but behaves differently optically. Diamond is singly refractive, whereas Moissanite is doubly refractive. This double refraction produces a prism-like spectrum of colored light, especially visible when viewed at an angle. Though this effect resembles the fire seen in diamonds, it’s simply the result of light bending and splitting inside the stone.
